I picked up on an older subject/article where others that have said that a barrel obtaining the “Oval P” could have been equipped by Winchester:

I can't establish particularly if the “Oval P” was 1st used determined by my operate but I might make this observation. The Oval P proof stamp is barely observed on barrels which have a Design 3 barrel handle which is found within the remaining aspect from the barrel. This posture was not common right until 1910 to the Model 1892 rifles.

Into the best of my information, if you find a pre-1905 Winchester by using a “WP” evidence within the barrel, although not on the receiver, any individual other than Winchester swapped the barrel.
